E3: Art Fun vs Art Fundamentals...

This is the Third Episode of The Visual Scholar Podcast - With Tim Mcburnie.

In this episode, we discuss the fun versus fundamentals.

On the one hand art can often be an enjoyable process. It can be fun just to draw, and to focus on creating the things we like. But often to get good... we need to embrace craft, to embrace the challenge. Getting the right balance between grinding your craft and enjoying the process is critical.

To unpack this problem, we discuss how learning art can sometimes be different from the way that we have learned intellectual skills in "traditional" education. Understanding these differences can be a great way to trust the process and appreciate how our natural skills can improve just by doing.

And I also go into the idea of integration and how important it is to apply the theoretical ideas that you learn about art into your everyday practice. To make them real.

Perspective, rendering, anatomy… Are only going to be useful if you integrate their information into the work that you want to create.

A good solution is actually pretty simple... spend a small portion of your time regularly focusing on craft. And to spend the majority of your time creating your own pieces and projects. The more you can integrate craft into your specific style and medium... the better.

This Podcast is designed to help you demystify the world of Art, Productivity, and Creativity. So you can get better faster, and enjoy your Art Journey. We discuss Drawing, Painting, Illustration and Entertainment Design. Along with Productivity and Career Advice.
